This is a question that has a simple answer, but two versions of that simple answer. Version number one is “You can get help from the NHS by instructing your doctor/local GP to put you in touch with local mental health services as soon as possible.” But ANYONE here in the UK who has done just that knows that doesn’t do anything and at best you might be put onto a waiting list that is several months long. The real simple answer should be “If you are struggling at all with regards to your mental health you should seek help from anywhere you can even if its only friends and family.” This might not be what you want to hear, but it is the true way of seeking help.
Most of the time you will find it is a postcode lottery of services on offer. Some local councils even offer TC’s while most of them just offer various group therapies like CBT and DBT. Sadly it doesn’t matter where you are from you need to fight for these services. Prove you are in need of them, tell them every single day if needs be why you need help. Tell friends you are struggling, tell family members and just keep hammering home the fact that you need help.
For the rest of us, there are only two other routes to help and that is self-treatment or private treatment. Private might seem like a daunting thought especially with the average cost being £40 for a 45 minutes session, but if you can get enhanced rates of universal credit or even better PIP you can at least use some of that money to help pay for private therapy or self-help and it looks even better on a PIP form if you tell that that is why you want it approved.
In most cases, there are services on offer I promise you and the NHS does what it can do with the feeble mental health funds it is given. Just don’t give up fighting for them. Make phone calls, send emails, Google search what is available to you, just do what you need to do to access them. IF you need any help or advice with regards to this issue do let us know via the contact page. We might be able to help point you in the right direction, or at the very lest guide you on your options.
